  1. WE ARE ALL LEGENDS: Front Cover - An acrylic painting on a 9 x 12 size poster board. It appears on the front cover of the softcover book, "We are All Legends," by Darrell Schweitzer, published by Donning in 1981. The left half of the painting (the back cover) is shown in picture 234.

The ruins of that church in the background reminds me of how much the church has declined in the life of Americans since this country began. During the early years about 90% of the public went to some kind of church on Sunday, today it's less than 10%.

But in early America, there were no schools, no professional teachers, no school books; the church was the first American school, the preacher was the teacher, the Bible was the first American schoolbook. Religion tied the family, the community, and our government together. Religion was the foundation that held this country up, our motto; "In God We Trust".

When I was young I went to church occasionally, usually on holidays. But I always went to church picnics, church outings to Lake Hopatcong, church trips to the seashore, church dances, and bowled on the church team. I also went to the annual church "Minstrel Show," where church members dressed up in old Czech costumes and sang and danced and acted out comedy bits. And at the end of the show the actors and the audience all stood up and sang, "This is My Country". In those days, the 1940s and 1950s the church on Sunday was packed. - None of those things are happening today.

In the 1940's and 1950s I knew the names of almost everyone on the block, and some who lived on nearby streets, or around the corner. Today - I don't know the name of a single person in my area, not even my next door neighbors! . . . I say "Hi" if we pass each other by, but who are they?
